Many have asked, how do you know what you are seeing is real? I ask, how do you know what you are FEELING is real? They don’t get it, I didn’t either until the day I died.

In the past, I used to feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up or have an odd feeling someone was watching me, but I could never see anything. My intuitive side would say “there is something present, my gut tells me so,” but my head would always rationalize it as an impossibility.

So how did it go from being a familiar scent of perfume I was smelling and associating it as a coincidence, to seeing my grandmother knowing what the message was she was trying to tell me? I will do my best to explain myself here.

We have all had dreams in our lives where we felt the presence of someone close to us who has passed. Maybe we chalk it up to “wishful thinking,” or others say your mind is playing tricks on you, or maybe you are overcome with grief, desperate and vulnerable to believe something exists when it does not.

I am here to tell you, it does exist.

Only the evidence will show you how many skeptics and scientists, including many doctors, have turned a corner after investigating my experience.

As I sat with a friend the other night, I saw him turn around at the same moment I saw something. He said “is Jacob behind me?” It was way past my three-year old son’s bedtime and I smiled because he had felt what I saw. I said, “No, why did you say that?” He said “I felt the back of the hair on my neck stand up, like someone was breathing there.”

Then he paused, knowing my history, and said “What? Why? Who was it?”

I said, “it was an adult man, with light hair and light eyes, wearing a blue striped shirt.”

“It’s my uncle,” said my friend. “He was 37 years old when he died from cancer.”

I enthusiastically replied, “GREAT! Not great he died from cancer, but you know what I mean.”

What I wasn’t prepared for, was his reply: “Come on Steph, I have to go outside and walk the dog, don’t scare me like this.”

And in that moment, I realized, many people feel the same way. I assured my friend, that his uncle isn’t trying to scare him. “You should feel blessed you have someone around you, watching out for you, helping you make decisions,” I said. “He is there to guard your soul. The fleeting moment you FEEL something, is the exact moment you should stop and listen to your surroundings.”

Something happened in that moment to cause it to vibrate in my friend’s body. It happens to all of us. And when we are more in tune with it, we will hear the message loud and clear–as long as we are willing to accept it.

I no longer ignore any of it. I was just reminded by my friend, many are not ready to hear it, or prefer to tune it out. And that’s okay.

I do live by the motto “If you SENSE something, SAY something,” because it could save your life. But when it comes to sensing spirits, maybe I need to understand, not everyone is ready to hear it.
