Here is <a href=\"http:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/es\/2014\/04\/16\/american-society-of-anesthesiologists-newsletter-this-month-and-ad-campaign\/\">our story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:right;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The American Society of Anesthesiologists told me some astounding information when I first learned of their existence. \u00a0They said, &#8220;most people do not know that anesthesiologists are actually doctors.&#8221; \u00a0I knew they were physicians, but what I told them this month at their Legislative Conference, was that, and I am ashamed to admit it, I did not know they held my life in their hands. \u00a0I just assumed my doctor was the quarterback and she would be in charge of my life. \u00a0I am embarrassed I did not process the information they gave me in my five minutes I met them. \u00a0I also told them, that needed to change. \u00a0That if someone would have told me they were in charge of keeping me alive, I would have at least paid attention to their name and maybe bought them a cup of coffee.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1610\" src=\"http:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/stephanie-and-asa-leaders.png\" alt=\"Stephanie and ASA Leaders\" width=\"206\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/stephanie-and-asa-leaders.png 206w, https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/stephanie-and-asa-leaders-150x185.png 150w, https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/stephanie-and-asa-leaders-10x12.png 10w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/>For the most part, a physician anesthesiologist comes in, does their job and you recover. \u00a0Never really knowing who took care of you. Nor caring. \u00a0You only really care when there is a problem, so for the majority of people who come in and out of surgeries, it is a non-event. \u00a0BUT in the off chance you need someone to take charge and save your life, your physician anesthesiologist takes over and does that job at lightening speed, because SECONDS do count. \u00a0Their time with a patient is HIGHLY CONSEQUENTIAL. \u00a0It is a difference between being alive or dead and I am acutely aware that I am alive today because of quick thinking doctors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">I was overwhelmed by the support and love shown to me at this conference. \u00a0Not only is my story out there to use as an example of how to communicate how anesthesia saves lives, but I was able to prove\u00a0that doctors are people too. \u00a0I was a bit overwhelmed speaking in front of hundreds of MDs, congressmen and lobbyists. \u00a0They are hard core about policies, how they get their message across to the public and how they are represented, especially on Capitol Hill. \u00a0But by the end of my story, I received a standing ovation with tears in some of their eyes. \u00a0I was awe struck. \u00a0Here I was, nervous about speaking in front of them, but the advice given to me by one of their own said, &#8220;just speak from the heart and you will be fine.&#8221; \u00a0I did and it was more than fine. \u00a0Thank you Emil.<a ref=\"magnificPopup\" href=\"http:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/11178243_715061568639598_44653295285084768_n.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1616 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-convention-lobby.png\" alt=\"ASA convention lobby\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-convention-lobby.png 260w, https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-convention-lobby-150x113.png 150w, https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-convention-lobby-16x12.png 16w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/>One of the Hot Topics\u00a0the ASA was discussing at their\u00a0conference\u00a0was a possible change in the Department of Veteran\u2019s Affairs (VA). They are considering a new policy that would abandon their proven model of team-based anesthesia care where nurses and physicians work together and try to eliminate physician anesthesiologists from the<br \/>\nteam<span style=\"line-height:1.5;\">. \u00a0I am all for moving up in the ranks, lowering costs and running a business effectively. \u00a0But when lives are at stake, it is an entirely different story. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height:1.5;\">If the VA thinks that a nurse anesthetist\u00a0could have acted in seconds, they are sorely mistaken.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height:1.5;\">And if they think the elderly won&#8217;t have more issues to be concerned with under anesthesia, I think they need to think this one through a little bit more.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1619\" src=\"http:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-brochure-on-display.png\" alt=\"ASA brochure on display\" width=\"257\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-brochure-on-display.png 257w, https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-brochure-on-display-150x111.png 150w, https:\/\/stephaniearnold.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/asa-brochure-on-display-16x12.png 16w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/>Physician anesthesiologists go to medical school to know a great deal about the body. \u00a0They have to know a lot more than physicians who specialize in one aspect of the body. \u00a0And when in a precarious position, you want someone who can get your heart started, your blood pumping and you breathing as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disaster happens in minutes. \u00a0Seconds count.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">If you are the patient and <em>you SENSE\u00a0something, you need to SAY something<\/em>. \u00a0<\/span>And if that person who will be holding your life in their hands is not listening, you ask for someone else.
